Our History

How we came into Existence

In 1950, a group of individuals that served as football referees for local high school and other amateur leagues formed the Windsor Football Referee Association (WFRA). Over time, the Association has also been referred to as the Windsor District Football Officials Association

The Association’s mandate included the promotion of a standard interpretation of football rules and a standard type of officiating of the highest caliber. Its purpose was also to co-operate with all organizations connected with the game of football in furthering its interests and ideals.

In this regard, the new Association immediately established a relationship with the Windsor Secondary School Association (WSSA) and its counterpart in Essex County to supply referees for local high school games.

Although the official titles of the parties involved have changed over time, the WDFOA is proud to have sustained 74 years of uninterrupted football

officiating service at the local, regional, provincial and national level.
